How to keep your passengers occupied

Car Reg “Scrabble”. Play for points by looking at the first letter of a car registration number of other cars, vans & trucks on the road using “Scrabble” tile values so,

  • A, E, I, O, U, L, N, R, S, T: 1 point each
  • D, G: 2 points each
  • B, C, M, P: 3 points each
  • F, H, V, W, Y: 4 points each
  • K: 5 points
  • J, X: 8 points each
  • Q, Z: 10 points each

… then add a joker element by saying “Blue cars count double and green cars count triple points”. Perhaps set a time limit such as “the winner is the one with the highest number of points when we get to …”

  • Another personal favourite is – The place name challenge. Take it in turns to name a place and the next player has to follow on with a place name starting with the last letter of the first. Warning, Halifax and Herstmonceux are show-stoppers!
  • Listen to a children’s audiobook or podcast.
  • Play “I Spy”.
  • Tell jokes or riddles, or play word games like Word Association.
  • Have a sing-along to favourite children’s songs or nursery rhymes.
  • Have a storytelling session, where each child takes turns telling a story based on a theme that someone else suggests.
  • Plan a scavenger hunt, where children try to spot specific items or animals outside of the car. For example, the first one to spot a pigeon or the first one to spot a post box.
  • Play with magnetic travel games or colouring books and crayons.

Play “10 Questions”

  • One player thinks of a person, place, or thing and keeps it a secret from the other players.
  • The other players take turns asking yes or no questions to try to determine what the person is thinking of.
  • The player who is guessing has 10 questions to try to figure out the answer.
  • If the player correctly guesses the answer within 10 questions, they win the round. If not, the person who is thinking of the answer wins the round.
  • The game can continue with different players taking turns thinking of a person, place, or thing, or the same player can keep thinking of different answers.
